Nicaragua Grants Asylum to Ex-Salvadorian President under Corruption Probe.

Mauricio Funes Is Being Investigated in El Salvador for Five Crimes

EspaƱolNicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his adminstration have granted political asylum to former President of El Salvador Mauricio Funes, who served in office between 2009 and 2014.
Funes made the request for his wife and three children as well.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua reportedly granted him political asylum under the belief that Funes was in danger.
“His life and physical integrity and that of his family (were in danger)” said a Ministry of Affairs announcement, “as a result of their struggle for democracy, peace, justice and human rights and political affiliation in the Republic of El Salvador.”
