A number of corrupt local politicians got their comeuppance this year.
Former state Sen. Ron Calderon of Montebello is expected to serve nearly six years in prison for taking bribes from an undercover FBI agent posing as a film producer.
His brother and fellow Montebello representative, former state Assemblyman Tom Calderon, is going to jail for a year for shepherding some of those bribes through his consulting firm.
And former El Monte Councilman Louis Aguinagacould serve as many as 10 years for taking thousands of dollars in bribes from a city contractor. In addition, an unnamed city official was referenced in the indictment against Aguinaga and could be next.
But will these sentences and others that have been handed down make a difference? Will they serve as a deterrent for future politicians to stay on the straight and narrow?
