IPOH: Police detained a Penang Customs officer suspected of soliciting bribes from two grocery shop owners in return for not taking action against them for selling contraband cigarettes.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the 39-year-old man was arrested at a roadblock near the Trong police station at 5.30 pm yesterday following a report from one of the victims.
The victim claimed that the suspect had solicited RM500 from him at his shop yesterday and had previously demanded RM1,000, he said.
“The victim refused to pay and told the man they could discuss the matter at the Changkat Jering police station. But on the way there the suspect drove off in his Perodua Myvi car,” he said after the monthly gathering at the Perak Police contingent headquarters today.
According to Mohd Shukri, 40 minutes later the suspect drove the same car to another grocery shop at Sungai Kerang, Taiping and took RM300 from the second victim.
He said investigation on the Perodua Myvi registration had revealed that it belonged to the suspect and Penang Customs identified him as one of their officers.
“We seized some cash and his Customs authorisation card,” he said.
The man has been handed over to the Taiping Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today for further action, he said. – BERNAMA
